Executive Trends: Digital platforms may be good to television (September 2015)

Pay TV in Latin America

Social networks activity by people while watching TV might be beneficial to programming, since the largest part of the messages exchanged appears to be related to the content they are watching and may be considered 'mouth to mouth' promotion.

Private Advisor Consulting Team testing of tweets related to TV programming ratings in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Colombia shows two to three-times higher response during the airing of the content than afterwards or next day.

Original programming glut may be a bubble.

The sharp rise in original programming displayed as part of the Third Golden Age of TV in the U.S. might not last: the rising production costs --in part caused by this same demand-- and dwindling advertising revenue may force the free and pay television networks to cut back on spending next year. HD and 4K shooting are not helping to keep tight budgets, either.

Mexico - VOD OTT market share per companyUS Hispanic: Univision in hot water, despite successful ratings

Despite its success in overall-market ratings, Univision appears to be losing money and is in huge debt, making local analysts not comfortable regarding its oncoming IPO. According to The Economist, it currently owes over $10.5 billion and lost $178 in 1H2015; the IPO's main goal might be to allow its 1997 buyout entrepreneurs, led by Haim Saban, to exit the ship promptly.

A skinny BBC in 2017?

The end of its Royal Charter en December 2016 will force the Beeb to slash expenses in 2017, no matter what sort of deal is secured to continue its existence. While its executives are planning to cut back on what are considered non-essential services, the future of some of its programming jewels, such as Doctor Who and Sherlock, might be also compromised. One of the proposals is to extend the BBC domain to Internet access, as it happens in Germany.

Latin America - Top Cable Networks

Brazil: Globo exposed to stronger competition

The latest ratings data coming from Brazil show primetime TV Record telenovela Os Dez Mandamentos at only 0.5 to 1.5 points behind Globo's flagship A Regra Do Jogo, which started at a higher level (28 pts. vs. current 20-21 pts.) Locals are divided between those considering that a Regra Do Jogo is to be faulted and those feeling that, after many years, Globo's traditional leadership is now under fire.

Turkey: TV industry testing new genres for International markets

The Turkish TV producers have discovered, after the success of "1001 Nights", "Ezel" and "Fatmagül", that the Latin American markets demand faster-paced product in order to continue purchasing their fare. So, they are now experimenting with product more suitable for overseas markets, yet palatable to local Turkish audiences, who so far have footed the bill. Lighter drama, comedy and teen series are some of the possibilities being tested.

MIPCancun 2015 to be held on November 18-20

MIPTV and Mipcom organizator Reed Midem is extending its reach to Latin American producers and countries usually not attending the Cannes venues through its second Cancun, Mexico meeting, on November 18-20. The organization reports there are already 83 confirmed buyers attending, and about 50 more content producers than the roughly 35 attending the first powwow in 2014. Drama, documentaries, formats and kiddie shows will be the most demanded genres.

Andina Link Central America, a better opportunity for equipment vendors

The 2015 Andina Link Central America trade show, held in Costa Rica and attended by some 500 participants, underscored this year that the cable operators within the region are more interested in equipment purchases than adding programming to their lineups. Yet, one interesting development is a planned future meeting of part of these operators with Mexican colleagues, seeking an alliance to jointly purchase programming they cannot obtain individually due to their small subscriber count.
