27-07-2016
MK Media Group (Ukraine) launched a new project for the global market: the documentary drama Unfortuity. DMArt Production, part of the group, has finished filming and production of the first serie of this new TV show, whose first season has 13 episodes and will be launched by the end of this month.

Unfortuity is a documentary and fiction program about the discoveries in the world history, an intriguing story about the accidents that changed the world for better. Screenwriter Artem Gordynia, from DMArt Production, comments: ‘While other media companies are trying to resolve the dilemmas “how to create in order to sell successfully?”, “entertain or educate?” or “format or exclusive?”, we picked the most juicy elements and packed into a stylish TV documentary feature film according to the fiction film rules, that developed into a docudrama in series’.

‘Docudrama its a hybrid film genre, that emphasizes the historical events played by actors, but is apparently presented in the form of a documentary or popular – scientific film. However, we will not talk about the internal kitchen of TV production, rather about somthing else. If to be more specific, we will make an attempt to answer for the dilemmas described above, and thus, will try to find the key to the solution of the main issue: how to create in order to sell successfully’, he adds.

The plot of the each episode is the real story of the accidental discovery, invention, or an event that greatly influenced the history of mankind. He continues: ‘We have identified three time periods in which unfortuity has played a key role. First segment is directly the time when the accident/coisidence happened, the second - its the point where we can see the result of this accident the most clearly see. Both of these intervals occur in the past. And finally, the third time slot is our time, where we meet the consequences of that accidents’.

The three time periods give the production company the opportunity for improvisation in terms of creating a non-linear plot and differ Unfortuity from other dokudramas, based mostly on the historical reconstruction. Here the reconstruction is based on the real facts (the time of the accident/coisidence), intertwined with stories of events that happened, but reproduced on the basis of the fictionfilm (when we see the result of the past accident), or hypothetically occur in our time.

Gordynia concludes: ‘The well-designed concept allows us to create an interesting and exciting TV program with a lot of facts and useful information, educating and looking impressive at the same time, thanks to the entangled dramaturgical plot. Unfortuity is staying apart from the other dokudramas, but from the other side, remains under the same format’.
