Keshet acquires global rights for Croatian series The Paper

15-09-2016
Global rights for one of the most anticipated Croatian series The Paper have been acquired by Keshet International. The international premiere was held on 14 June 2016 during the New Europe Market (NEM), where the partnership deal was agreed.

The Paper is a 12 episode crime series that follows the newsroom of a Rijeka daily paper amid an ownership change and internal turbulence caused by a serious car crash. The story revolves around an influential conservative tycoon who buys left-wing papers in a serious financial crisis, in order to establish his influence.

The dark cocktail of political corruption, crime and betrayal is directed by one of the most successful Croatian directors and a Cannes laureate Dalibor Matanić. The series, written by writer Ivica Đikić, deals with political centres of power, as well as journalism as a profession that became an instrument to achieve other goals.

'It was easy to agree with Keshet on all levels. We are happy that the project is in good hands and feel like it “came home”. The way Keshet produce is what we have been trying to achieve for years in our own work', said Nebojša Taraba, creator and producer of the series.

Keshet International acquisition head Sebastian Burkhardt said: 'We came across The Paper at NEM and were extremely impressed by the quality of the production. Everything from the storytelling, to the direction and the cast leads it to be very timely and universal. With current opportunities for non-English speaking series, and our experience with them, we are confident that the series will find its audience outside of Croatia'.

Drugi plan production company, led by Taraba and Miodrag Sila, is in charge of production for pubcaster HRT. Branka Katić, Trpimir Jukić, Aleksandar Cvjetković, Olga Pakalović, Zijad Gračić and others are among the main cast.
