MIPTV 2014: docs, formats and digital

MIPTV 2014 provides this week a renewed structure and schedule. The market has offered again the traditionals MIPDoc and MIPFormats on Saturday and Sunday respectively, and continues to expand MIP Digital Fronts and MIPCube with conferences and activities during all the week. According to organizer Reed Midem, over 11,000 participants are expected, with 3,800 buyers of which 1,000 are digital, from over 100 countries.

But, there are many different elements at this 51st edition. First, a complete and varied agenda of Media Mastermind Keynotes, including Christ Albrecht, CEO, Starz (USA), Avi Nir, CEO, Keshet (Israel), Olivier Courson, CEO, Studiocanal (France), and Rola Bauer, president, Tandem Communication (Germany), as well as digital players such us Alex Carloss, global head of entertainment, YouTube, Deb Roy, chief media scientist, Twitter, and Roy Price, director, and Tara Sorensen, head of kids programming, Amazon Studios.

Second, a new focus on kids content. Held on Tuesday 8 April, Junior at MIPTV is dedicated to kids and teen programming executives from Disney, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Globosat, Ki.KA, MediaCorp, ABC, Google, etc, and presents many panels about co-production, digital and the future of this dynamic genre.

Third, the World Premier Screening, starting on April 7 at 6.15pm at the Gran Auditorium with Starz original drama series "Power" (in production with CBS Studios) and The Honorable Woman, co-produced by BBC and Sundance Channel and starring Hollywood star Maggie Gyllenhaal, same day at 3pm.

There are two big events held during MIPTV: the 9th Annual International Digital Emmy Awards (April 7th at Martinez Hotel), where Google’s YouTube is being awarded with the 2014 Pioneer Prize, as a result of its ‘innovative contributions to the field of digital entertainment’.

And the Gala Dinner: Medaille D’honneur on April 9 at 8pm at Carlton Hotel, an event launched in 2013 on the occasion of MIPTV’s 50th anniversary that awards senior international executives. Reed MIDEM CEO, Paul Zilk, recognizes Marion Edwards, president of Int’l TV, 20th Century Fox Television Distribution; Konstantin Ernst, CEO, Channel One (Russia); Herbert G. Kloiber, chairman and owner, Tele Munchen Group (Germany) and Tim Worner, CEO, Seven West Media (Australia).

Israel is the highlighted country, and holds a party on Tuesday evening at Carlton Hotel. According to Eurodata TV Worldwide, more than 60% of entertainment programming launched in Israel in 2013 were original productions, and 50% of fiction series. There are top examples on fiction side about Israel success, such us Prisoner of War (Keshet) and Hostages (Armoza Formats), both adapted in US as Homeland (Showtime) and Hostages (CBS).

Mexico, the second Latin American market to be “Country of Honor” for MIPCOM 2014, is having strong presence this MIPTV with an important stand and press conference of ProMexico to be held on April 7 at 5pm, to announce news & developments for October.

The MIPTV 4K Ultra-HD program is another highlight: created in partnership with Sony Corporation and sponsored by SES Astra, it represents the world’s first showcase of 4K content covering all entertainment genres. The global industry is able to see real 4K footage and experimental transmissions covering live action, factual, natural history, music, sports and drama all showcased in a dedicated 4K Theatre located in the main exhibition hall.

This MIPTV includes the presence of important screen TV stars. Apart from the mentioned before, we have in Cannes "Curtis Jackson aka 50 Cent", "Power" (Starz), Kim Cattrall, "Sensitive Skin" (Tricon Films & TV), Amy Poehler, "Broad City" (Comedy Central)," Titus Welliver", "Bosch" (Red Arrow) and Kerry Bishé, "Halt & Catch" (eOne), both actors of the Oscar winner "Argo", among others.

Laurine Garaude, director of TV division at Reed Mideem, resumes the key issues of this 2014 edition of MIPTV: ‘We want to anticipate trends, to bring the technology titans closer and to make focus on creators from any side of business. MIPCube is the great new thing, joining online producers. We keep gathering big tech players with the content industry, with companies such us Accenture that has a booth for the second year in a row, and we continue to partnership with Sony on the 4K- Ultra HD technology’.
