Annecy/MIFA 2024: animation to the next level

ore and more every year, the pack of Annecy Festival with MIFA market inside, is considered by international kids content executives as an important parade to take for sure. This year the Festival (with screenings and conferences) is set from June 9th to 15th, while MIFA (Marché international du film d'animation) for business meetings and networking, runs June 11th-14th.

Last year the Festival got a record attendance of almost 16,000 people from over 100 countries, whose 6,000 professionals were at MIFA. This year the expectation is to catch up or even surpass these numbers.

Highlights this year? About Annecy Festival, a big one is the integration of dance into the festival's theme. The "Choreographies: Animation and Dance" section explores the intersection of these two movement-based arts, showcasing how dance has influenced animation filmmakers. Second, a major new feature is the "Annecy Presents" section. This non-competitive category introduces a wide range of feature films suitable for all audiences, particularly younger viewers. And third, there is a special tribute to Portuguese animation, celebrating its 100th anniversary. Throughout the week, top talents in Portuguese animation are showcased, including seven special programs curated by experts such as Fernando Galrito, the director of the Lisbon International Animation Festival - La Monstra.

Among the screening events, a top one is "Hola Frida", by André Kadi, Karine Vézina and produced by Tobo Média, Du Coup Production. Also, the legendary couturier Jean-Paul Gaultier & nWave Studios present their new feature film project, with more details to come. On the "Making of" sessions, "Common Side Effects" (produced by King of the Hill) introduces its first episode exclusively at the Festival, having generated great expectation. And "War is over! inspired by the Music of John & Yoko" (directed by Dave Mullins) a short film based on John Lennon’s iconic song "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)," is presented by its creators, telling its journey to win the Oscar® for Best Animated Short Film.
