Canal+ and HBO Max, are backing “The Weekend”
The Nigerian thriller has secured deals with Canal+ and HBO Max, cementing the rise of African cinema on the international stage. The psychological thriller The Weekend, produced by the Nigerian company Trino Motion Pictures, continues to expand its international reach with two key deals that strengthen its global presence. First, Canal+ acquired the distribution rights for more than 60 French-speaking territories, while HBO Max added the film to its catalog in Central and Eastern Europe.
Directed by Daniel Oriahi and produced by Uche Okocha, the film has become one of the most exported independent titles in recent Nigerian cinema. Its journey began at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival—where it made history as the country’s first selected independent production—and continued at festivals such as the BFI London Film Festival and Screamfest.
The story follows Nikiya, a young woman searching for a sense of belonging who visits her fiancé’s family, triggering a disturbing series of revelations. With a narrative of sustained tension and a focus on dark family traditions, the film managed to connect with diverse audiences.
The international performance of The Weekend reflects a broader trend: the growing interest of streaming platforms and broadcasters in African content with global potential. With multiple awards at the Africa Movie Academy Awards, the film not only solidifies the growth of Trino Motion Pictures but also confirms that local stories can reach and resonate beyond their borders.
