MIPTV 2016 + MIPDoc, MIPFormats, MIPDrama, MIPDigital

02-04-2016
Though MIPTV 2016 starts on Monday, April 4, there are two key events taking place on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3: MIPDoc and MIPFormats. And during Monday 4 and Tuesday 5, organizer Reed Midem has confirmed the third edition of MIPDigital Front and for the first time, MIPDrama Screenings, on Tuesday 5. There is a lot to cover during the 53rd edition of MIPTV.

MIPDoc, which celebrates its 18th edition this year, is focused on factual and documentary programming, which is a hot topic within the global market. According to Eurodata TV Worldwide, factual content accounted for more than a third of newly launched programs in 2015 (based on the NoTa scope in 2015: 44 countries), with documentary series representing the majority of these new shows.

Big companies are re-thinking the documentary business. For instance, commercial media group ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG (Germany) launched its first FTA, ad-supported documentary channel for the domestic TV market. ‘We see potential among viewers who are currently watching the public channels -40-65 years old- and they like documentaries’, says Katja Hofem, COO & MD of small channels & new channel development.

MIPDoc includes over 1,600 registered programs and projects, and about 2,000 hours to be screened by buyers and commissioners over the two days. It also features major keynotes, conferences, case studies, screenings, networking events and one-on-one buyer meetings. Reed Midem expects 850 participants from 560 companies and 400 buyers from 50 countries.

Keynote Morgan Spurlock, writer, director and producer, Warrior Poets (USA) discusses today about digital content and distribution and how to engage younger generations, while Lewis Joe, head of half hour programming, Amazon Studios, will describe tomorrow the most recent project The New Yorker Presents.

The schedule includes View from the Top: What do buyers want? with ZDF (Germany), RMC Découverte (France), Discovery and Smithsonian Networks (USA), and The Rise of Online Originals with digital platforms CuriosityStream, Alliant Content/XiveTV and Spicee.

Crime has become a hot topic worldwide, so MIPDoc offers True Crime: What’s the Buzz? panel in association with Documentary Campus. As a show of this trend, Sony has launched last month the UK network True Crime focused on reality-based crime features. Kate Marsh, EVP, Western Europe, International Networks: ‘Viewers are fascinated by true life stories. The channel further builds on the success of our free-view channel portfolio and marks our commitment to the UK market’.

On Sunday 3 at 5pm it is organized an exclusive MIPDoc Screenings with The Story of God with Morgan Freeman. This six part series will be premiered the same day globally, produced by Revelations Entertainment for National Geographic.

Described as “an immersion course in big ideas”, the 7th edition of MIPFormats shows the next wave of must-see scripted and non-scripted formats. Reed Midem estimates close to 1,000 participants, with 330 buyers from 67 countries participating on five keynotes, 7 screenings, The Fresh TV selection with Virginia Mouseler and The MIPFormats International Pitch by all3media International (UK).

Keynotes are organized on April 2 with Bibiane Godfroid, CEO, Newen Group (France) and CEO of CAPA Agency, Maria Kyriacou, president international, ITV Studios (UK), and Gary Carter, non executive board member of KLOK Creative Agency (UK).

On Sunday 3 at 11, 5 finalists will pitch their projects Hero Or Zero (Tanin Productions & TV, Israel), Keep Up With The Neighbors (Pernel Media, France), The Call (Phonebox Productions, UK), Toss & Turn (The Concept Collective, USA), XYZ (Y Circus & Liraz Casting, Israel) to an international jury of experts: Stephen Lambert, Studio Lambert (UK); Tony Tackaberry, Lion Television (USA); Ying Lei, Hunan TV (China); Anette Rømer, TV2 (Denmark) and Nick Smith, all3media International (UK).

Nicolas Smirnoff, Fabricio Ferrara and Rodrigo Cantisano
