The Kitchen details Miami's growing importance for international dubbing projects
The Kitchen, the language localization studio based in Miami, highlights its capabilities in providing neutral American English dubbing for international projects. The studio, which has been operating for 24 years, emphasizes its growing team of native English directors and voice talent.Brad Strickland, Director of Production, stated in an official press release that ‘the true, non-accented, pure American English dialect is the backbone to most international language dubbing projects’. He added that the studio has 17 dubbing suites at its headquarters and a network of native, non-accented speakers.
Ken Lorber, President/CEO of The Kitchen, addressed historical perceptions of Miami's English pronunciation. He acknowledged that in the past, Miami had a ‘tarnished reputation’ due to the influence of immigrant communities. However, the executive noted that the Latino community has become ‘far more sophisticated’, with younger generations assimilating more into American society. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic brought thousands of Americans from other major U.S. cities to Miami. The city has also seen growth in tech companies, financial institutions, and the hospitality sector. This cultural expansion has attracted artists from various media and entertainment disciplines.
Lorber also explained that recording projects in Miami is ‘significantly less expensive than recording the same project in Los Angeles or New York’. He further commented on the growing importance of their U.S.-based, English-speaking team in the international language process, stating that they now have experienced performers who have contributed their voices to a range of projects including animation, anime, novellas, feature films, live-action series, video games, and political and educational content. Lorber claimed that ‘if you compare Miami to Los Angeles, there is little difference in the quality of the voice acting, but here the cost is much less’.
The Kitchen also offers "Dubbing 101" workshops to train new, native US English-speaking, non-accented talent of all ages and provide refreshers for experienced voice actors. The Kitchen is an Emmy Award-winning language localization studio with service hubs in Miami and Madrid, and sales offices in London, Miami, and Madrid. The studio handles work to and from all languages, across various formats and genres.
