Mozart Mozart : the secret story of the forgotten sister
The new series from Beta Film and Story House Pictures revisits the life of Maria Anna Mozart, the talented sister of the genius, with a modern and daring tone. In conversation with Prensario, Andreas Gutzeit and Swantje Oppermann talk about how the project came about and what makes it unique. From Dignity to Sisi, producer and showrunner Andreas Gutzeit and screenwriter Swantje Oppermann have been crafting historical narratives with a contemporary perspective. Now they return to an iconic figure with Mozart Mozart, the new series from Beta Film and Story House Pictures, directed by Clara Zoë My-Linh von Arnim and presented as a vibrant reinterpretation of the musical legend.
The series' big gamble is to rescue Maria Anna Mozart, sister of the famous Wolfgang Amadeus, who despite being equally talented was relegated to silence by the limitations of her time. ‘We find in her a modern character: a woman who had to abandon her career just because she was a woman. That conflict still resonates today’, explains Oppermann.
Gutzeit adds: ‘Mozart is a 250-year-old framework that is still alive today. We were drawn to telling the story from a different perspective and with a contemporary tone, almost asking ourselves: what music would Mozart make if he were alive today?’.
The series blends period opulence, modern aesthetics, and contemporary musical riffs, creating a bridge between classicism and today's sensibilities. For the creators, it was key to bring a young, female perspective behind the camera: 'Clara Zoë was the perfect director to tell the story of a woman struggling to make her way in a male-dominated world.'
The story is also constructed as a thriller of identities and ambition: Maria Anna pretends to be her brother at the court of Emperor Joseph II, captivates Vienna, and awakens the rivalry of Antonio Salieri. The result is a historical drama that combines romance, deception, and universal questions about talent, recognition, and inequality.
‘At its core, it's the story of a young woman who takes control of her destiny. And she does so with courage, intelligence, and a lot of music’, Gutzeit concludes.
