MIPTV 2017: millennials don’t say the last word

05-04-2017
MIPTV 2017 comes to an end today with a peculiar mixture: less or flat attendance, but business up. Dramas, digital and co-productions head the traffic, while some markets are recovered for the first time, as Central & Eastern Europe. Also, the event has been particularly rich in new concepts and fresh initiatives. Examples? Read below…

Generation Z: ‘They already represent 46% (7-20 years old) of the total population, while millennials are 19%, Generation X, 18%, baby boomers 12% and silent generation 5%’, explained Richard Chambers, executive producer, Zoomin.TV (The Netherlands). ‘And take care: Z guys recover many traditional values, against millennials. Nothing is linear, as you can imagine’.

‘27% of Z people post videos weekly. On the opposite, 26% of adults have never posted an original video’, added Kelly Day, chief digital officer, Awesomeness TV. ‘Niche is the new massive’.

AOL’s Digital Prophet, David Shing: ‘Innovation is the most abused word, because it is actually more about invention. One is about change: innovation. The other is about creating: invention. There is no technology better than human touch. We have to think about this ‘connected’ human being: 37% of children under the age of 2 can operate a swiping device better than their parents’.

Virtual Reality: ‘We are at the beginning of what tech can do. VR is a new computing platform… the next mass medium. In VR you can be anyone, you can go anywhere and you can create anything’, said Rikard Steiber, president Viveport, and SVP Virtual Reality, HTC (USA).

Co-productions: TV Azteca (Mexico) RTVE (Spain) and Telemundo (USA) announced a big-budget co-production series called Hernan Cortes, about the legendary Spanish conquer that made the ancient Aztec empire to fall 600 years ago. The project is done with BluePrint (Mexico) and DiagonalTV/Endemol Shine (Spain). Production will start late this year, premiering in 2018.

Emergent regions: ‘About content business, there are countries with particularly strong potential of development: Ethiopia, with 80 millions population; Myanmar, 60 millions; and Vietnam, 80 millions. Also, French speaking Africa, that includes 200 millions people and 16 countries, packed as a sole region’, said Patrick Zuchowicki, CEO Basic Lead/Discop events.

What have buyers looked for at this MIPTV? Conrad Riggs, Amazon, USA: ‘All kind of contents, but especially unique ones, with new languages’. Milagros Mayi, TVE Spain: ‘Fiction, from any origin. It is what makes us grow. Ruediger Goess, ProSiebenSat.1, Germany: ‘Dramas are the new big thing’. Anna Verbovska, MK MG, Russia: ‘Cartoon co-productions, long series, documentaries and films in Spanish’.

Maria Iregui, RCN Colombia: ‘Entertainment formats but with conflict matters: Latins need this’. Tibor Forizs, RTL Klub, Hungary: ‘We’ve produced our first fiction, a comedy, and we look for entertainment shows: talent, etc’. Giorgi Lominadze, Rustavi 2, Georgia: ‘We have dramas from Turkey, India and Brazil, we want to add more from Latin America’.

Tarmo Kivikallio, YLE Finland: ‘Content to bring young audiences back to TV. We’ve had good experiences with video gaming and reality content’. Margarida Pereira, TVI Portugal: ‘Formats, both fiction and entertainment’. Estefania Arteaga, Viki (USA): ‘Drama series from new origins, like India, The Philippines and Turkey’. Frank Holderied, RedBull (Austria): ‘Mainstream content’.

Kids buyers? Hernrietta Hurford-Jones, BBC (UK): ‘Big animated shows that can travel, mixing comedy and investigative. We are also experimenting with dramas for 2-5 years old’. Nina Hahn, Nickelodeon: ‘We thing glocal. Content that can be relevant regionally but that speaks to global kids’. Flavio Medeiros, Discovery Kids Latin America: ‘Animated series both for 4-8 years old. Regarding live action series, is difficult to find content than travels, but with big personalities and brands, it’s easier’.
